Why
Use Adventure-Based Programming?
"Get
high on fresh air, physical activity, scenic views, and challenging
adventures."
Because
adventure-based experiences are:
- Action-oriented.
Passive interactions are turned into active experiences. Clients
“walk” rather than “talk” their behaviors.
Learning is experiential, not theoretical.
- Conducted
in an unfamiliar environment.
Participants get involved in situations and activities that are
new, unique and simplified, yet still supportive. They face challenges
that remove them from their comfort zone, yet are designed to produce
achievement.
- Designed
to capitalize on the positive use of stress.
“Eustress” or the healthy use of stress, is introduced
into the client’s system in a healthy and manageable manner.
This type of stress positions participants in situations where use
of trust, cooperation, and clear communication are necessary to
achieve desired results. Adventure experiences also provide an inherent
level of motivation based on clear and concise consequences for
inappropriate behaviors.
- Conducted
in small groups and a supportive atmosphere.
In small groups (6 – 12 participants) with high leader/client
ratios (usually 1:4 to 1:6), conflicts can be resolved with positive
group interaction, and leader intervention. Individual desires can
be met, but they must be accomplished in association with the needs
of the group, and the guidelines of the program.
- Solution
oriented.
Participants are presented with opportunities to focus on their
strengths rather than their weaknesses (or abilities rather than
disabilities). This can diminish initial defenses and lead to healthy
change. Rather than being resistant to confronting their problems,
clients are challenged to stretch perceived limitations and to discover
untapped inner resources, strengths, and solutions.
