Equipment - What To Bring on an Expedition

This list may be used as a guideline in your planning and packing. Please be aware that the list may fluctuate based on specific environments, seasons, or activities.

  • backpack (80-120 litres size)
  • lightweight expedition tent (eg. Eureka Timberline 2 – 3 person tent)
  • large tarps
  • rope
  • portable camptove, fuel
  • mess kit (pots, pans etc.)
  • water filter/pump (eg. MSR, Pur, Sweetwater, Katadyne) and/or chlorine drops, iodine purification tablets
    • note:above items may be supplied by the lead organization and/or WSC Survival School Inc. where needed
  • personal cutlery, plate (plastic type)
  • four-season sleeping bag (eg. Thinsulate, Polarguard fill, mummy design)
  • underpad-bedroll for sleeping bag (eg. closed-cell foam, ensolite, Therma-Rest self-inflating)
  • water bottle (eg. Nalgene bottle, Plasma Bag type) + 2 litres of water
  • sunscreen
  • insect repellant
  • flashlight (and spare batteries, bulb)
  • fox-40 whistle
  • silva compass
  • notebook, pencil
  • candles
  • personal medications, toilet paper, toothbrush/toothpaste, non-phosphate soap
  • towel, swim suit, water shoes/sandals
  • hiking shoes
  • rain gear (eg. poncho, rain suit)
  • woolens, fleece clothing (sweater, pants, long-johns, extra socks, hat, gloves, jacket)
  • sun hat
  • trail snacks (nut-free)
  • willingness to accept new challenges, and to seek the reasons why you are doing something after the activity, not before!

The layering concept should be adhered to when preparing clothing; e.g., 2 changes of clothing, with options to peel clothing off if too warm, and to put clothing on if too cold.

FYI - Many second-hand stores (eg. Value Village, Army Surplus) have inexpensive fleece and woolens, and rain coats.
