Overview:

The most efficient way to access wild areas in an environmentally friendly way is by means of canoe.

Purpose:

To introduce all aspects of lightweight camping as applied to canoe tripping.

Topics:

  • how to plan and implement a canoe trip into the back-country
  • paddling techniques
  • types of canoes
  • selection of paddles
  • PFD's
  • canoe safety and rescue (Coast Guard regulations)
  • camping gear and clothing
  • menus, and,
  • trip planning.

Canadiana will be an underlying theme, including skills and lore of the Voyageurs, native peoples, and early explorers. 
The program will conclude with a wilderness canoe trip.  Partial outfitting and canoe rentals available.

Duration:

  • 3 or 4 three-hour evening sessions or 2 seven-hour Saturday sessions, plus, optionally, a canoeing day or weekend canoe trip.

Misc:

Course textbook available at first session, $24.95.
An additional fee will be charged for O.R.C.A. qualifications, ($ tba), to those participants who choose to qualify.
