| Overview: |
This
course will teach students how to identify 50-75 different species
of plants, trees, shrubs, ferns, and lichens. |
| Purpose: |
To
learn the uses (edible, medicinal, or camping) of wild species,
and learn to distinguish poisonous and toxic species. |
| Topics: |
- basic
principles of ecology and habitats,
- species
preferences and site distribution,
- rules
and regulations,
- safety
and health concerns,
- ethics
of plant foraging.
Students
will also learn to make teas, salads, jams and bannock. |
| Duration: |
- seminars
(2 three-hour evening sessions or 1 eight-hour Saturday session)
, plus,
- field
hike (9 hours)
