TIPS AND TRICKS
- ALWAYS
carry minimum survival essentials:
- first-aid kit
- map and compass
(click here to see Compass Setup Song)
- fire-building supplies (flint stick, waterproof matches)
- shelter-building supplies (space blanket, 8x12 sheet of plastic)
- folding saw
- signal flares
- whistle
- water needs (can for boiling, purification tablets, or filter)
- before
setting out on your adventure, replace the batteries in your
flashlight (John Fuller, Kitchener, ON).
- when
selecting a site for a shelter, watch for and stay away from
a) widowmakers (dead or leaning trees that could come crashing
down), and b) proximity to beavers, who will cause a tree to
come down where you least expect it!
- pack
a hat! This will protect you not only from sunny rays but also
from hailstones!
- keep
your knives sharp. Accidents happen when it doesn't cut and
then you try to use force, and the knife slips (Karl Euler,
Kitchener, ON).
