COURSE OUTLINE
The one-day course agenda is as follows:

9:00 am - Introductions and 5 priorities for a Lost Situation

9:30 am - Prevention, Avoidance and Preparedness:
-Being
lost and not being panicked
-Search and Rescue basics
-Profile of a lost person
-Survival Statistics
-Managing risk in the outdoors
-Hazard identification

10:30 am -The Science of Survival:
-
Top Priorities/Essentials when faced with a Survival Situation
-What to do if
lost or stranded, increasing your
odds of being found alive
-
11:00 am -The Survival Kit and Outdoor Gear/Clothing/Communications:
-Preparing
yourself before you go
-Best gear for outdoor excursions
-Communications: Primitive and Contemporary to assist in locating
a lost victim
- 1:00 pm - The Gameplan:
-Shelter
building
-Fire building
-Signaling
-Water
-Foraging
-
3:30 pm - Trip and Emergency Plans
- 4:00 pm -Basic Map
& Compass and G.P.S.
The
Advanced Course also includes a wilderness survival weekend. Participants
in the Advanced program qualify to write a a 1.5-hour exam ($25.00).
Upon successful completion, you will obtain the Advanced WTI Survival
Certificate.
The next exam date is May 1, to be held at Durham College, Athletics
Department.
